Interpreting & Technology: How Technology Affects Court Interpreting and Interpreters IV

Learner Objectives: This is a continuation of discussion on how technology affects court interpreting and interpreters and how interpreters could utilize technology to improve their interpreting skills, efficiency in time management, as well as marketing efforts.

Course Goals: An interactive session aimed to assist interpreters to adapt with the change in technology as well as utilizing various tools to improve their interpreting skills, efficiency in time management, as well as marketing efforts.

Specifically, participants in the class will learn

  • Recent trends of artificial intelligence in the technology
  • The applications of artificial intelligence on translation and interpretation
  • Implications of artificial intelligence on the translation and interpretation industry
  • How to look up unfamiliar terms in a fast and efficient manner using cell phone
  • How to improve accuracies of interpreting during depositions by using different software such as real time from court reporters, as well as online dictionaries
  • How to improve translation and interpreting speed through different machine translation software
  • Tricks on finding accurate translations online through Google search
  • How to translate documents with other translators through Google's translation tool
  • How to effectively manage time via the use of calendar software, traffic avoidance, etc.

Class Outline: 10am to 11am:

Recent trends of artificial intelligence, from AlphaGo to Google Translate, and Iflytek's interpretation device using AI

How technology affects the translation and court interpreting industry: Trend of Google translate’s technological development. (Better accuracy, real time interpreting, voice recognition, partnership with online translation companies, and other trends)

11am to 12pm: How technology affects interpreters

How technology affects interpreters: How to fully utilize Google translate’s database to increase the speed and accuracy of translation and interpretations, Machine translation software Trados, other tools and software that interpreters can use. Potential effect on the translation and interpretation market with the technological changes.

1pm to 3pm: Interactive session and demonstrations of different tools that interpreters can use during court interpretations, depositions, or other interpreting assignments. This two hour session also includes interpreting practices for participants to interpret using several of tools to improve their interpreting accuracies.

3pm to 4pm: Interactive session and demonstrations of Google translate to increase the speed and accuracy of document translations

4pm to 5pm: Interactive session on improving the efficiency in time management, as well as marketing efforts

Instructor:

Samuel Shen Chong is a Mandarin certified court interpreter originally from Beijing. As an experienced interpreter, he has rich experiences in legal and business interpretation, medical interpretation, as well as different modes of interpretation such as consecutive interpretation and simultaneous interpretation.

Roster of Attendance will be provided before the start of the class and Certificate of Completion will be provided after the class.

Refund policies: For prepayment online. Fees will be refunded for cancellation two days before class.There will be no refund for onsite payment.

Notification of activity cancellation: In case the above interpretation class is cancelled, we shall notify potential students 5 (five) business days before the start of the class.
